Blackburn athletics weekly wrap-up
Last Saturday, the Blackburn College volleyball team travelled to Washington University in St. Louis for the first tournament of the season. In the opening match, the Beavers took on University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where they were swept in three sets. Blackburn looked to rebound immediately against number seven nationally ranked Washington University. Unfortunately they were also swept, 25-8, 25-6 and 25-9.
Patrece McClain and Meghan Ude each had four aces while Allie Matt added four kills.
The women’s soccer team made a weekend trip to the state of Iowa to face off against Grinnell College and Coe College. Blackburn dropped both matches beginning with an 11-0 loss to Grinnell. Shana Sewick collected 18 saves for the Beavers. Sunday, Blackburn trailed just 1-0 at halftime before falling to Coe 5-0. Sewick notched 17 saves in this contest.
Men’s soccer will kick off their regular season this week after tuning up in an exhibition match against Heartland Community College.
The Blackburn College Harriers took part in their first meet of the season at St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, against rival, Principia College, Aug. 31. Illinois College also took place in the meet. Top runner for the men was Christian Gragnano who finished 11th with a time of 22.52. Teammate Jake DeRousse was close by as he finished 14th. Rounding up the rest of the team was Nathan Speckhart (16), Andrew Rowe (18), Seth Tonsor (20), Paul Kline (22), and Mitchell Elliot (23).
The top runner for the women was freshman Tavi Wallace who took 13th, with Keragan White (21), Nicole Bonnell (22), Brooke Boston (23), and Jodie Rains (24) finishing things up for Blackburn.
Next meet for Blackburn will be Sept. 13 when they run in the SIUE Cross Country Challenge.
