Open letter from Carlinville schools superintendent

Open letter from Carlinville schools superintendent

Friday, March 13, 2020, Governor Pritzker issued Executive Order 2020-05 closing all public and nonpublic schools beginning on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. He further clarified the reopen date will be March 31, 2020. The closures will be through March 30th. At this time, school will reopen on March 31, 2020. This reopen date will be reviewed by the Governor and closures could be extended. We will keep you appraised of this ever-changing situation. Every school will be providing students with information on Monday to allow the school to provide academic supports during the length of the closure time. The purpose of e-learning or remote learning days are to:

 Ensure student academic progress does not dramatically regress over the closure period;

 Ensure students will be exposed to important academic concepts that are needed to be prepared for the next grade level or college;

 Ensure students that are currently enrolled in dual credit/college credit classes are able to meet college requirements to receive credit; (those course requirements are governed by the colleges)

 At the higher grades, provide students opportunities to complete assignments to alleviate workload that may happen to cover curriculum when school resumes;

 Ensure students are prepared for Advance Placement exams that students may be wanting to take;

 In addition, the e-learning/remote learning provides students needing letters of recommendations and other items for college entrance and scholarships access to necessary staff. “Carlinville CUSD#1 will provide a comprehensive educational program for all students in a safe environment supporting and inspiring learners of today, while fostering global leaders of tomorrow.”

E-Learning/remote learning days do not take the place of a full day of instruction at school. We are not able nor are we trying to provide students with content equivalent to a full day of school attendance. The e-learning/remote learning days are not scheduled every day.

The following will be the schedule for the time of the current closure: Monday, March 16, 2020 Tuesday, March 17, 2020 Wednesday, March 18, 2020 Thursday, March 19, 2020 Friday, March 20, 2020 Regular school Day No E-Learning E-Learning Day E-Learning Day No E-Learning Monday, March 23, 2020 Tuesday, March 24, 2020 Wednesday, March 25, 2020 Thursday, March 26, 2020 Friday, March 27, 2020 E-Learning Day E-Learning Day No E-Learning E-Learning Day No E-Learning Monday, March 30, 2020 Tuesday, March 31, 2020 E-Learning Day Return to School We are asking that students and parents reach out to their teachers on the e-learning days to ensure all students and parents have the supports they need. Various reasons may cause a student to need to work at different times, but the designated days and times are designed to allow staff to be accessible to parents and students. On Monday, teachers will provide students and parents information regarding how to access them and the content. The following is a general schedule, but staff will also be available at other times they designate to parents and students and will respond when available. The following are grab and go sites:  Carlinville High School-Circle Drive by Gymnasium  Carlinville Intermediate-West Side Parking Lot  Parking Lot behind South School Apartments  New Head Start Building-former site of The Church of the Nazarene  Chesterfield Community Center  Plainview Baptist Church Parking Lot  Machine Shop at Broadway and William Streets in Standard City Parents and/or students can come to these sites from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. each weekday (Monday-Friday) beginning Wednesday, March 18, 2020. Each child is eligible for both breakfast for the following day and lunch for that day. All children enrolled in our school district or below the age of 5 are able to receive a lunch and breakfast bag. We will be trying to establish drive up areas and areas to walk up and receive bags. No one will be allowed to stay at the sites. In addition, materials needed for learning will be available at these sites. District-issued devices that break can also be taken to these sites and other learning devices will be provided from these sites during the closure period. A school bus will be at each location to make it easier to find these food distribution sites. If families need additional help with food, please contact the district office at 854-9823 and we will work to provide assistance. If you or your children are not able to be at the sites during the designated times, please contact the school using the number provided for other arrangements to be made. Again, grab and go bags will begin on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at the sites listed from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Carlinville CUSD#1 will continue to communicate changes as needed. Again, this is an ever-changing situation. We appreciate the support of parents and our community as we work to address the needs of our students. Respectfully, Dr. Becky Schuchman, Superintendent
