Woodburn man killed by intruder; victim’s identity released
UPDATED: Woodburn man killed by intruder
The Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting that led to the death of a Woodburn man early Thursday.
At about 6:15 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was made reporting that a man had been shot. Bunker Hill police and Macoupin County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home in the 3000 block of Edwardsville Street in Woodburn, a small community just west of Bunker Hill.
“When officers arrived on the scene they found a deceased 34-year-old white male inside the residence on Edwardsville Street,” said Macoupin County Sheriff Shawn Kahl, who noted that the man was found with fatal gunshot wounds, including one to the head.
According to Kahl, a pair of family members, who shared the residence with the victim, were woken by the sounds of a disturbance and became involved in the struggle with the masked assailant, but neither was able to get a good look at the intruder. The witnesses reported that the suspect fled through the front door and left the location on foot, but they did not see a direction of travel.
“We’re not even clear on what actually took place inside the house or how the intruder got in,” said Kahl, “We’re not even sure if the suspect is a man or a woman.”
Kahl stressed that investigators consider the situation an isolated incident. The case is being investigated by the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois State Police and Bunker Hill Police.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 2, at 8 a.m.
The victim was identified as Cody Adams, 34, of Woodburn, according to the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Office.
