Wildcats defeat Routt for volleyball regional title

It was 34 years in the making, but the Mt. Olive Wildcats volleyball team finally were able to hoist the regional plaque.

By holding off feisty Jacksonville Routt 25-20, 24-26, 25-20, the Wildcats won a regional for the first time since 1982. They won the Mt. Olive Regional Thursday night in Class 1A.

The Wildcats faced New Berlin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Jacksonville Routt Sectional. The winner moves on to the Thursday sectional final against either Springfield Lutheran or Hardin Calhoun.

Zoe Murphy had 35 assists in the match, with Jill Niehaus recording 23 kills, 17 digs, eight blocks and four points.

Brianna Henke added 12 kills, three blocks, 12 digs and five points. Caitlyn Fields had 12 digs and Courtney Kernich finished with 10 digs and six points.
