Super Summer Weekend enlivens square

CARLINVILLE (Aug. 2, 2018) – Carlinville square was the place to be over the weekend, with sidewalk sales and a variety of family-friendly activities, including Carlinville Rotary Club’s ice cream social, a performance by the Carlinville Municipal band, the Macoupin County Cruisers Car Show and the Imagine Rural Arts Chalk It Up sidewalk chalk art contest. In addition, Advanced Eye Care held a 5K race Saturday morning, and there were performances of The Little Mermaid by the Summer Repertory Theatre at Blackburn College Friday through Sunday.

For the chalk art contest, first-place winners in each of five age groups were as follows: age 6 and younger, Evan Hergenrother; ages 7-10, Charlie Harding; ages 11-15, Jillian McLaughlin; ages 16 and older, Bobbi Bates; and family, the Sullivans.

According to Dennis Pickrel, this year’s car show raised about $8,000 for the Carlinville school district’s CavPac organization and FFA. There is still some money coming in and some expenses that have to be paid, so a final total has not yet been calculated.

“We are thrilled with the turnout and looking forward to next year,” said Pickrel, who noted that there were more than 100 vehicles entered in this show — more than last year. “The weather was just perfect, and we got a lot of good comments about the event and about or community.”
