HSHS St. Francis Hospital received a certificate of appreciation from Catholic Charities Intact Family Services of Springfield for being recognized as the top donor for the Adopt-A-Family Program in 2016. The Department of Children and Family Services refers families in need to the Intact program. The goal of the Christmas program in 2016 was to match donors with families in need. Donors were to sponsor and entire family and provide household goods, bedding, clothing and toys for each child.
Colleagues at the hospital donated gifts for 10 families. “We had a special Christmas tree in the cafeteria where angel ornaments listed the ages of each child in a family. Our colleagues picked it clean in the first few days,” explained Joanne Van Leer, director of radiology and mission integration at the hospital. “We also had a wish list from the families so colleagues would know what to buy. They bought clothes and toys for the kids. One department purchased sheets and comforters for their chosen family, as well. Another purchased a game console and several games. Our colleagues wrapped each gift to make it special for the children opening them on Christmas day. They purchased a lot of gifts! We stuffed two SUVs full the day we delivered them to Catholic Charities. They were very surprised of the amount we collected and they were grateful for the generosity shown by our colleagues.”
Along with the certificate of appreciation presented to the hospital was a note which stated, “We at Catholic Charities cannot express the gratitude we have for the love you showed to so many families. Lives were not only touched, but changed… to give to those who you don’t even know warms the staff’s hearts here at Catholic Charities.” The group noted that because of sponsors such as St. Francis, they provided Christmas to 59 families and over 150 children this year.
