SLF, MMSG team up for Christmas for a
CARLINVILLE (Oct. 12, 2017) – Again this year, Shop Local First and Macoupin Military Support Group are sponsoring a county-wide drive to collect everyday accessories, amenities and boxed, non-perishable food for pre-Christmas shipment to Macoupin military men and women serving overseas.
The drive starts Monday, Oct. 23, and will end Tuesday, Nov. 7. Volunteers from MMSG will pick up the donations from drop-off business locations on Nov. 8, then sort, pack and mail the individual packages to arrive before Christmas weekend.
“We urge everyone — individuals, businesses, churches, service organizations, clubs and schools — to donate to a cause that says, ‘We know who you are, we have not forgotten you, we know what you endure away from home, and we want to thank you for serving your country and making all of us in Macoupin County proud to know you,’” said Christine Goldstein, MMSG president. “It doesn’t matter whether you donate items from home that are safe and new or go out and buy the goods, just as long as you remember to do it before Nov. 8. If you can’t get out to gather the items, then either contact an MMSG or SLF member to stop at your house or business fro the pick-up, or donate money. We will use the money to buy additional food, clothing or accessories that can help fill any gaps.”
The list of items sought is extensive and includes, but is not limited to, non-perishable food items such as breakfast bars, crackers, chocolate, jerky, sausage sticks, nuts, coffee, tea, gum, breath mints, trail mix, sunflower and other edible seeds, canned meats and cheeses, honey, sugar and packaged creamers, and small-sized canned or plastic jar goods; clothing and accessories such as watch caps, stocking caps, towels, gloves, shoe insoles, foot powder, dark socks, bug spray, chapstick, handheld checkers or other games, DVDs, fleece throws and paperback books, among many other options. Goldstein said Christmas-themed items make good, morale-boosting contents in the holiday packages. “Santa hats, small homemade or bought ornaments, miniature Christmas trees, Christmas stockings with little accessories in them, holiday-wrapped candies, and similar items would give our men and women an added measure of home and family during the holidays,” she said. A complete list of recommended items is available on “Christmas for a Soldier” flyers posted throughout the county.
