The severely damaged front end of this semi remains after it collided with the rear of a tractor on Route 16 east of Gillespie on May 27.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 27, a semi pulling a trailer hit a tractor from behind on Route 16 east of Gillespie.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Route 16 and Henderson Road. A single car traveling west turned left onto Henderson Road toward Eagarville just ahead of the tractor that was about to do the same.

As the tractor began to turn left behind the car, the semi, also traveling west, slammed into the left rear wheel of the tractor, pushing the tractor almost 30 yards into the grass off the side of the road. Witnesses said that the semi did not appear to be slowing down as it collided with the tractor. “There were no skid marks,” said one witness who asked not to be identified. Witnesses also estimated that the semi was traveling between 50 and 60 miles per hour when it struck the tractor.

The tractor suffered damage to its rear axle, and the tire was pushed off its rim. The semi, however, suffered significant damage to its front end where it collided with the tractor.

Two Gillespie-Benld ambulances as well as several trucks from the Gillespie Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. Neither driver of the vehicles sought immediate medical attention following the accident. Macoupin County Sheriff’s officers and Illinois State Police officers worked on-scene interviewing those involved in the accident as well as controlling traffic on the busy road. Shortly after the fire trucks and ambulances left the scene, a large tow truck arrived to haul away the undriveable semi.
