By Daniel Winningham
Carlinville High School’s varsity baseball team had its season come to an end with a 1-0 defeat to Southwestern High School in an Illinois High School Association Class 2A Sectional semifinal contest in Pleasant Plains May 22.
The Piasa Birds scored the only run of the game on a double in the ninth that brought around Nick Parrino from first base. Earlier in the contest Southwestern had two runners cut down at home plate and a third runner on third base tagged out on a failed squeeze play.
Joeb Easterday was the starting pitcher for CHS. He went 5 1-3 innings, striking out four and walking six. Dalton Jamieson relieved Easterday, going 2 2-3 innings before surrending an RBI double to Hunter Watson in the bottom of the ninth.
The Cavaliers were held to five hits in the contest. Bryce DeSpain went 3-4 with two doubles but Carlinville was unable to get a runner past third base.
Eric Pingolt and Jake Carter added singles for CHS.
Carlinville finishes the season with a 9-18 record. The playoff loss to Southwestern was Carlinville’s first defeat in extra innings this year (4-1). Southwestern improved to 23-6.
