SB1 a good bill for communities

Dear Editor,

My son is in Pre-K and like many other parents with children that will soon be in school, I have been concerned about the future of education in our communities. Every year it seems fewer programs are available as school districts are forced to continue to operate with less funding.

Meanwhile, many other schools in the state don’t seem to have those problems. They are able to pay teachers competitive salaries and offer extensive extra-curricular actives at their schools. Some of them even have Olympic-sized swimming pools!

The state’s broken education formula has led to this imbalance in our schools. For nearly three years, Sen. Andy Manar has worked to fix the formula to bring more money to rural, downstate districts like ours.

This year, he passed Senate Bill 1 through the legislature, which will bring thousands more dollars to school districts in our area. It will finally give our children a chance to have the same opportunities as those in other parts of the state.

However, there has been a push to discredit the work Sen. Manar has done and Governor Rauner has already said he will veto the bill, even though he also said he agrees with 90 percent of it.

This is a good bill for our communities and our kids. Please call Governor Rauner’s office at 217-782-0244 and ask him to sign Senate Bill 1.

Sincerely,

Kyle Frericks,

Carlinville
