Robert E. Norland, 62
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (May 22, 2018) – Robert E. Norland, 62, of Gainesville, Fla., passed away peacefully Sunday, May 20, 2018, in Gainesville.
He was born Jan. 12, 1956, in Warrensburg, Mo., to Robert B. and Armande Norland.
After the family moved to Black River, N.Y., in 1959, Mr. Norland graduated from Carthage Central High School and completed his bachelor of science in industrial engineering at the University of Colorado in Butler, Colo. He moved to the Dallas, Texas, area after college and began his career at Texas Instruments. His life in Texas spanned 37 years before he moved to Gainesville three years ago to help his sister with the care of their aging mother. His first love was the game of golf. He loved everything about the game — reading about the physics of it, taking lessons, practicing daily, playing in tournaments and a brief stint as an LPGA caddy — but what he loved most were the people; he cherished golf trips with his friends, including the Carlinville Open, the Cody Stampede, and the annual Orlando trips with the Schaefer brothers. He amassed a collection of golf clubs and stories. He was also a self-proclaimed “chef” and when not on the golf course could be found in the kitchen or with his grill.
Surviving are his mother, Armande Norland of Gainesville, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn and Anthony Brennan of Gainesville, Fla.; nieces Meaghan (Craig) Gulledge of Gainesville, Fla., Claire Reilly of Austin, Texas, and Abby Brennan of Raleigh, N.C.; nephews, Henry (Jennifer) Brennan of Denver, Colo., and Travis Reilly of Cheyenne, Wyo.; great-nephew and great-niece, Owen Gulledge and Bridget Gulledge of Gainesville, Fla.; his canine companion, Rose; and his “second family,” the Schaefers of Carlinville.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Debra Reilly.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Elk Creek Church in Kensett, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Haven Hospice in his name.
