Prep Tuesday: Walkoff ends Cavaliers’ softball season in
HILLSBORO (May 16, 2018) – Faith Holtz delivered an RBI-single in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday night to give Hillsboro a 3-2 victory over Carlinville in the Class 2A girls’ softball regional tournament.
Carlinville finishes the season with a 12-10 record. Hillsboro advances to Friday’s regional final against Gillespie or East Alton.
The Toppers loaded the bases with two outs in the first, but pitcher Alyssa DeSpain struck out Syd Herpstrieth to end the threat.
Hillsboro scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Alexis Wolf doubled with one out and scored on a single by Claire Tester.
In the third, Chloe Beck walked and scored on an RBI-double with two outs by Riley Hemken.
It stayed 2-0 into the fifth inning. Carlinville had stranded two on base in the fourth, but a leadoff double by Emma Griffith and a single by Lexi Bates put runners at first and third.
An error scored courtesy runner Gracey Kahl, while Paityn Tieman grounded out to score a second run and tie the game 2-2.
Carlinville got a leadoff double from Griffith in the seventh, but was stranded there.
Hilsboro got a runner to second in the seventh but couldn’t get the winning run, so the game went to extra innings.
The Cavies went down in order in the eighth against Kai Hanner.
In the bottom of the eighth, Hemken doubled with one out. A strikeout made it two outs, but Holtz found a hole for a game-winning RBI-single for the Hiltoppers.
It was the second one-run loss at Hillsboro this year for the Cavaliers.
DeSpain struck out seven, walked three and allowed eight hits and three earned runs. She takes her talents to Lincoln Land Community College next year.
Hanner struck out 10, walked two and allowed five hits and two runs for Hillsboro.
Sydney Cania had two singles; Griffith had two doubles; Bates had a single and run; Tieman had an RBI and Kahl scored a run for Carlinville.
Shelby Houchlei had two hits, and Hemken had two doubles and an RBI for Hillsboro.
Marquette 13, Staunton 1
ALTON – Staunton’s softball season came to an end with a loss to Marquette in Tuesday’s regional semifinal.
The Explorers scored three in the first, five runs in the second, a run in the third and four runsi n the fourth.
Lauren Mathis had an RBI single for Staunton, scoring Kaylee Seelbach in the fifth inning. Ashleigh Painter and Darian Robers had hits as well.
Grace Nichols took the loss, striking out two.
In other regional action, Calhoun toppled Bunker Hill 7-4.
East Alton-Wood River vs. Gillespie and Tri City vs. North Mac will be made up on Wednesday after inclement weather delayed those games.
