Prep Tuesday: Southwestern ousted in regional finals
ALTON (May 23, 2018) – After a pair of postponements, the Alton Marquette softball regional final took place Tuesday night at Gordon F. Moore Community Park.
Gracie Morris hit a three-run homer in the sixth to lift Marquette Catholic to a 3-2 win over the Piasa Southwestern Piasa Birds.
Southwestern finished the season with a record of 21-7. Marquette advances to Thursday’s sectional semifinal at Gillespie, against Buffalo Tri-City.
Southwestern got a pair of runs in the fourth, one earned, to take an early 2-0 lead and it would stay that way until Morris launched a three-run home run which gave the Explorers the lead.
Southwestern was held to three hits, a double by Molly Novack, and singles by Bri Roloff an Megan Bailey. Novack and Haley Edwards scored runs for Southwestern.
Bailee Nixon took the loss, allowing four hits and three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts over six innings.
