Prep Tuesday recap: Cavaliers lose at Pleasant Plains

PLEASANT PLAINS – The host Cardinals handed Carlinville a third straight loss on the volleyball court Tuesday evening.

The Cards pulled away for a 25-12 win in game one, then held on for a 25-23 win in the second game.

Carlinville (7-7) will visit Southwestern on Thursday before hosting its own eight-team invitational Saturday.

Alyssa DeSpain and Sydney Bates each had 10 digs for Carlinville. DeSpain, Bates, Annie Rhodus and Lydia Albertine each had one ace serve. Grace Zachary had seven kills while Lynde Gibbs added four. Bates finished with eight assists and Albertine added three kills.

Plains got seven kills from McKenzie Smith and 15 digs from Jenny Rush as the Cardinals improved to 12-4.

Mt. Olive def. Marquette

ALTON – Mt. Olive needed three games, but defeated Alton Marquette 22-25, 25-17, 25-23 on Tuesday evening, improving to 11-2.

Courtney Kernich had 10 digs and Caitlyn Fields, Zoe Murphy and Brianna Henke had nine digs each.

Rachael Kernich added four ace serves, and Jill Niehaus had 17 kills.

In other action,

STAUNTON – Litchfield needed three games to defeat Staunton on the road Tuesday, 25-18, 16-25, 25-16.

MAROA – North Mac was defeated at Maroa-Forsyth Tuesday night 25-14, 25-17.

The Panthers were led by Bridget Bertolino with 11 assists. Bailey Stauffer added five kills and Alli Kallenbach three digs.

PIASA – Roxana defeated Southwestern 25-15, 25-10 on Tuesday. The Birds got nine assists from Stephanie Korte and four kills from Lexy Hall.

Boys Soccer

Carlinville 6, Roxana 2

ROXANA – Carlinville pulled away in the second half to record a 6-2 road win at Roxana Tuesday afternoon.

The Cavies (9-6, 7-1 SCC) led 3-2 at the half before getting three unanswered goals in the second half.

Logan Turley scored in the first minute of the match, assisted by Matt Schmidt. Another Schmidt assist on a Landon Eades goal at 8:18 made it 2-0 Cavaliers.

Roxana tied things up with goals about 15 minutes apart. The Cavaliers took a 3-2 lead on Koltan Page’s goal, assisted by Michael Douglas, at 39:26 to make it 3-2 Cavaliers at the half.

Page scored right after the halftime break, at 40:37, unassisted, then T.J. Gosnel got his first career goal at 43:30 to make it 5-2. Schmidt added insurance with a goal at 70:53, unassisted.

Carlinville got five saves from goalie Andrew DeNeve. The Cavaliers held a 31-6 edge in shots. The Cavies had 12 corner kicks to three for the Shells.

Girls Golf

FILLMORE – The South Central Conference girls’ golf meet took place Tuesday at Indian Springs Golf Course in Fillmore.

Greenville was led by Dannaman with an 87 and won the team title with a score of 414.

Staunton was second at 440, followed by Pana 441; Hillsboro 447; Carlinville 472; Litchfield 483; and Roxana 506.

Roxana’s Sharpmack shot an 82 to win the meet individually.

Ali Hurley shot a 93 for CHS and Sydney Cania added a 95. Ann Traylor shot a 137 and Cara Emery 147.

Staunton was led by Natalie Gusewelle’s 96.

College Volleyball

CARLINVILLE – Blackburn College lost in three games Tuesday at home to the Gorlocks of Webster University, 15-25, 26-28, 14-25.

The hitting stats had the Gorlocks at .280 for the match while Blackburn hit at .151.

Alanni Young had 10 kills and two blocks, while Jensen Ballinger had 17 assists and Maria Cline 29 digs. Alexis Dick added 23 digs and Marlee Lindstrom had 15 digs for the Beavers (1-15, 0-8 SLIAC).

Jory Siebenmorgen had 13 kills and three blocks for Webster (11-6, 7-2). Katie O’Toole added 21 digs and Macee Owen had 10 digs.

Men’s Soccer

SPRINGFIELD – Blackburn won a 4-2 decision at Robert Morris-Springfield on Tuesday night.
