Personal bests, medals for CHS cross country teams

The high school cross country season is hitting the midway part of the season.

Carlinville’s teams continue to get stronger, grinding out tough runs against strong competition.

Saturday was another case of this as the Cavaliers visited St. Joseph Ogden to run in the Spartan Classic.

Cory Landon was one second off a school record, all 14 athletes medaled and both teams finished in the top five of a stellar field of schools.

All Carlinville athletes who ran medaled for finishing in the top 100.

“Our athletes ran fantastic,” Carlinville coach Charlie Helton said. “Most ran personal best times.”

The girls race had Carlinville finishing fourth place out of 19 teams competing.

The Cavies finished a solid fourth with 139 team points. The top three schools were Urbana Uni-High at 63, St. Joseph-Ogden at 66 and Tolono Unity at 98. But nobody came close to catching the Cavies at fourth, as St. Anthony was fifth and had 225 points.

Colleen Madden notched another top five finish to her repoirtaire, taking fourth in a time of 18:32. Anna Sophia Keller of Effingham St. Anthony was the winner of the girls race in 16:14. Uni-High’s Arielle Summitt was second, but a distant second, at 17:54. She also got an award for the fastest finisher in her class, a senior.

Jacey Roper took seventh overall for the Cavies, clocking in at 18:54. Madelynn Williams finished 26th overall in 19:56, finishing under 20 minutes for the first time.

Carlinville’s boys side had some drama as far as school history was concerned.

Landon entered the race needing to reach 15:12 to tie a school record. On Saturday, Landon crossed the finish line at 15:13, good for fourth place overall.

The Cavies finished fifth as a team. Tolono Unity won the race with 43 points, followed by St. Joseph Ogden at 91, Shelbyville at 116, Monticello 127 and Carlinville 150.
