Penalties cost Miners against Carlinville

The Gillespie High School boys’ soccer team allowed Carlinville to set a season-high in goals scored as it fell in a Sept. 19 conference contest, 3-1.

Carlinville drew an early Gillespie foul three minutes into the game. This set the table for Trieton Park, who buried a penalty kick for the lead, 1-0.

Twelve minutes later, Park sent a pass in the direction of Levi Yudinsky. The sophomore tracked the ball down and dribbled it past his defender before launching it into the net for an insurance goal.

Jeremy Yakana put the Miners on the board with 2:16 remaining in the first half.

Both defenses battled down to the wire, until Gillespie committed another penalty. Trieton Park finished what he started and launched another penalty kick beyond the outstretched arms of Cameron Crow, restoring Carlinville’s two-goal lead with 2:20 left to play in the game.

The Miners saw their losing streak climb to a season-high four games with a pair of defeats against Metro-East Lutheran (3-1) and Roxana (6-2).

Gillespie, now 5-8-2, hosts Civic Memorial Saturday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. and Staunton Monday, Oct. 1 at 4:30 p.m.

The Miners travel to Vandalia Wednesday, Oct. 3. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
