Before the souped-up tractors took to the dirt track in front of the grandstands at the Macoupin County Fair June 28, another event involving dragging a sled for distance took place: the Macoupin County Farm Bureau Young Farmers Committee’s Kiddie Tractor Pull.

Children — and three fair queens — jumped on small green tractors and used leg-power instead of horse power to determine who could drag a small weighted sled the farthest.

Although several kids apparently changed their minds, and ran from the competition crying, most seemed to enjoy the event.

The audience and the organizers all cheered on and encouraged each participant, no matter who it was.

With categories based on the child’s weight, the winners were 30-45 pounds — Evan Starr, first; Konner Costello, second; and Henry Kalaher, third; 46 to 60 pounds — Makenah Dugan, first; Kack Rives, second; and Rex Reels, third; and 61-80 pounds — Jordan Griffel, first; Blake Killam, second; and Farris Howard, third.
