The passage of the Federal Farm Bill

To the editor:

The passage of the federal Farm Bill is a huge win for Illinois farmers and producers, as well as a win for every Illinois family, strengthening our state’s number one industry — agriculture. This Farm Bill provides a foundation to help our farmers weather the changing economy; protects the nation’s largest anti-hunger program by improving the integrity of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP’ increases funding for our land grant universities, like the University of Illinois system; and offers help to struggling farmers and ranchers, while still honoring a commitment to deficit reduction.

We owe a debt of gratitude to our congressional leaders who advocate for Illinois farm families, most especially Congressman Rodney Davis for his exceptional work on the House Committee on Agriculture and the conference committee to get this Farm Bill passed. During my three years as director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Rep. Davis has been incredibly helpful to the Illinois ag community and to farmers statewide. He has brought the Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, to communities in his district here in central Illinois, ensuring our voices and concerns are heard at the federal level. Rep. Davis is always available when our ag communities need a helping hand. Too often, our leaders don’t her our appreciation for the hard work they do in Washington to ensure our families get the assistance we need. I look forward to having Rodney Davis continue to represent the 13th District and Illinois farm families.
