Never too late for self-discovery, self-improvement

Never too late for self-discovery, self-improvement

By Eric Becker

On the 17th anniversary of one of the worst days in the history of the United States, Sept. 11, 2001, I write my final short commentary for the Macoupin County Enquirer-Democrat.

This is my final week here at the MCED, a journey which started three and a half years ago and ends with Friday’s football game against Pana.

I’ve battled high levels of stress and anxiety since early July, and perhaps that was a sign that it was time to step away from this business. This job can be very rewarding, yet can really hit you like a ton of bricks when things begin to spiral downward. I do regret not making this decision before the start of the school year, because now I feel I’ve let people down by not covering the teams from start to finish.

There isn’t one particular event which sparked the stress and anxiety I have felt. Sometimes things build and build, and without knowing it, you are suddenly driving home one dark night after covering a meeting sweating bullets wondering what in the world you are doing. The brain is one complex machine when given time to think.

Quite frankly, I need to spend more time with my wife and two kids. Nothing else really matters at this point.

The co-workers and owners of the paper have been nothing but great to me and my family, and I wish the newspaper continued success. Our staff are all very good at their craft and should be commended for the time and effort they put into the paper each week.

What will I miss most? The Carlinville schools. Without a doubt. Unquestionably. It’s been a pleasure to cover such a great school district, and the faculty, administration, teachers, coaches and on and on have been terrific to me and my family. Not since my early days in Albion did I feel a ‘connection’ to a school district like I had here in Carlinville.

With that, I say farewell, thanks for reading the paper and for all the comments over the past few years, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll see you down the road sometime, probably at a sporting event.

Go Cavies!
