Nancy E. Pocklington, 83

CARLINVILLE (Sept. 10, 2017) – Nancy Elizabeth Dow Pocklington, 83, of Carlinville passed away Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017, at Pleasant Hill Village in Girard.

She was born Sept. 3, 1934, in Carlinville to George William and Ruby Grace (Goad) Denby. She married William Paul Dow; he preceded her in death in 1962. She then married Irvin Pocklington in 1983; he preceded her in death in 2014.

Mrs. Pocklington graduated from Blackburn College and began a teaching career; she retired from Carlinville School District after 27 years of service. She and her second husband became very active in the American Iris Society and helped found the Sangamon Valley Iris Society; for this work, in 1994 they were awarded the Distinguished Service Medal of the AIS at the national convention in Portland, Ore. They also enjoyed travel; with their friends Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Mudd of Dupo, they traveled domestically and internationally, including destinations such as New Zealand, Canada, Alaska and Yugoslavia.

Surviving are her daughter, Virginia (Michael) Self of Springfield; son, Paul (Diane) Dow of Sherman; step-daughters, Susan Shedis of Brookfield, Martha (Arthur) Muirhead of Clifton, Va., and Judith Coles of Kansas City, Mo.; step-son, William (Robin) Pocklington of Girard; grandchildren, Nicholas Dow and Danielle Dow; step-grandchildren, Sara Howard, David Muirhead, Abby Coles, Amy Aguiar, Matthew Coles, Betsy Todd, Bonnie Grotjan, Kelly Stowell and Wendy Pocklington; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean (Melvin) Manis of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by sisters Marilyn Johnston, Lucille Pocklington and Virginia Pressler Leach.

Cremation rites will be accorded by Cremation Services of Central Illinois in Chatham. A celebration of life will be held from 2 p.m. until services at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 4, at Sangamon Prairie Reception Center, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham. Burial of her urn will be in Mayfield Cemetery near Carlinville. Staab Polk Memorial Home, Chatham, is serving the family.
