Mt. Olive volleyball opens season

ROXANA (Aug. 24, 2017) – It was a tough start for the Mt. Olive volleyball team Monday at the Roxana tournament, dropping three matches in pool play to Civic Memorial, East Alton-Wood River and Gillespie.

The Wildcats lost to Civic Memorial 25-14, 25-22 to open the tournament and the season. Lily Gretak had two kills and two blocks. Rachel Kernich added two kills, and Kaleigh Ziglar had three assists and seven digs.

East Alton-Wood River defeated Mt. Olive 25-23, 25-14 in the second match.

Gretak had two kills and a block. Ziglar added eight digs and Savannah Bruhn had three assists. Miranda Matta and Libbie Nowell each had two aces.

In the third match, Gillespie edged Mt. Olive 25-21, 17-25, 15-13 in a tightly-contested affair.

Bruhn had 11 digs, while Gretak and Matta each  had three kills. Matta, MaKenzy Sorsen and Kernich had seven digs each. Matta finished with 12 points, and Kernich had 10 points with six aces. Matta added four aces.

Mt. Olive finished fourth in pool play, and will play Saturday in the fourth-place bracket at the junior high gymnasium at 10 a.m.

Gillespie also opened the season, losing a pair and beating Mt. Olive. Gillespie lost to East Alton-Wood River 25-20, 25-13; and lost to Civic memorial 25-17, 25-14.

Gillespie plays in the third place bracket Saturday in the small gymnasium at 9 a.m.
