Soccer tournament raises nearly $1,500
The winners of the tournament this year were out of the Charleston/Mattoon area.
The championship came down to an exciting last-minute goal that went in the back of the net just short of time expiring. The Belleville team, which was vying for a third straight championship, was unable to take home first place in 2013.
“We are starting to expand the tournament outside of the Macoupin area and pull in teams from different areas,” Little said. “It’s nice to get new teams involved and see different competition in the games.
Organizer Brandon Little said the tournament brought in nearly $1,500 in 2013.
“We raised close to $1500 this year,” Little said. “Two $500 scholarships were given out this year, which leaves us $1,000 for next year to either split into two $500 awards or one nice $1,000 scholarship. We will be taking applications for the scholarship during the spring semester.”
CHS graduates that were presented with scholarships at the end of the 2013 school year were Quincy Keck and Ross Albert.
Little was pleased with the turnout for this year’s event.
“It was another beautiful day for the sixth year of the tournament,” Little said. “I want to thank all the participants and all of the generous help I receive every year. I would not be able to pull this thing off by myself. Thank you to the park board who does a great job every year getting the field and the concession stands ready for the day.”
Sponsors for this year’s event were Sonneborn Bros Trucking, CISCO, Anchor Inn, Starr’s Primal Meats & Liquor, Carlinville Eye Care, Davis Towing and Inkorporated Designs.
Inkorporated designs out of Virden made T-shirts for this year’s event.
“They are a great sponsor for the tournament and they do an excellent job with the shirts and sponsorship signs,” Little said.
