Make every day a celebration of our earth

April is Earth Month. Earth Week, April 21-25, is time to celebrate our planet. Earth Day — Tuesday, April 22 — is designated as an international celebration to commemorate and protect our world. The celebration of Earth Day is the largest worldwide environmental event. How will you celebrate and show your appreciation for the many wonders and beauty that our earth has to offer?

In 1970, Gaylord Nelson, a junior senator from Wisconsin, proposed dialogue that encouraged the importance of conservation and promoted ecology, respect for life on our planet, and an awareness of growing concerns for air, soil and water pollution.

“Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty,” Nelson proclaimed. “The objective is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all other human beings and all living creatures.” Forty-four years ago, Earth Day was established, and over the years it has evolved into a month-long celebration demanding changes for our environment.

Let’s perform acts of service and kindness to our earth. There are plenty of ways to become involved. Every act of kindness towards a greener earth is an investment in the future of our planet. Consider doing what you can to make our world a healthy environment for all life and reverse the environmental destruction.

Here are some suggestions: plant a tree, recycle, reuse, repurpose, pick up trash, take a walk and enjoy nature’s beauty, read a book under a tree, tend to a flower and/or vegetable garden, turn off unused lights, plant some seeds, enjoy bird watching and observing living creatures, ride a bike, start a compost pile or set up a rain barrel.

Brainstorm some more activities, with your children, that you can do together to celebrate and protect our earth. Have fun with your family and discover ways you can reduce your environmental footprint while making the world a better place.

My hope is that you spend some time outdoors, listening, noting, touching, smelling and even tasting our worldly gifts. Join in the celebration of our planet earth, each and every day. We must stand united for a sustainable future. Show respect and appreciation for the beauty of nature, including plants and animals. May we all do our part in protecting our environment and leave the world a better, healthier place for many generations to come. Our earth is full of tremendous beauty and much wonderment. Our earth gives us so much. What can you do to make a difference and give back to our earth? Every day should be Earth Day.
