Little Miss/Mister crowned June 24
By Daniel Winningham
With plenty of cowboy hats and a large pair of boots as a backdrop, this year’s Little Miss and Mister contest kicked off the grandstand entertainment at the Macoupin County Fair June 24, giving the audience a Western-themed evening filled with dancing, funny stories and more.
And when the dust settled, Konner Costello was named the 2013 Little Mister and Kirstie Brown was crowned the 2013 Little Miss.
Once the winners were identified, massive trophies were presented to the runners- up and winners, and then an onslaught of photos quickly ensued.
Kirstie Brown’s mother, Pam Birk, said singing, dancing and performing comes naturally for her daughter.
“It was a lot for the both of us,” Birk said. “She loves doing this kind of thing. She wants to be a singer and an actress. She loves to dance all the time. This was something she really loved to do. She doesn’t mind talking to the public. She’s a very social, outgoing child.”
Birk said her daughter was in pageants when she was younger. Birk is looking forward to the year ahead.
Konner Costello, 5, is the son of Holly and Bill Costello of Carlinville. He was named the Little Mister First Runner-Up in 2012.
H. Costello spoke about her son winning this year’s title.
“After he ran last year, this year he said, ‘Mom, can I do it again, I’d like to try one more time,” Costello said. “So he signed up for it, and here we are.”
