Lady Warriors hold year-end banquet
The evening began with a great meal prepared by the staff at the Elk’s with parents, grandparents and friends on hand to celebrate with the Ladies.
The teams were commented on by the coaching staff about their efforts from the season. Statements like: hard working, no drama by players or the team, “never say die attitude,” great improvement in all areas of the game, and a joy to coach were used to define the 2013 season. Thanks were given to assistant coaches, parents for their help throughout the season, Marla Woolfolk and Mary Hamel for all of their work in coordinating the booster responsibilities, Alby for all of the cookies and brownies and Wayne for all of the ice cream. The team was appreciative of bus drivers, and school personnel for their help. After going through the Fun Pages written by the players and their player selections, the evening moved on to presenting each team.
The 7th grade team finished the season with a 17-3 record, Co-Conference Champs, 3rd at the Carlinville Invitational, Regional, and Sectional Champs which gave them the elite title of being in the Sweet Sixteen of state. The team came a long way from the first day of practice when everything seemed incomprehensible to them to finishing their season in the Sweet Sixteen. Every player accomplished much in so many areas. The team went through a lot of injuries but each player continued to give of themselves until the final buzzer. This team has a bright future ahead of them in the world of volleyball.
Those receiving certificates for their work based on stats were: Alyssa DeSpain for High Service Points with 131, High Aces with 61 an High Kills with 84; Lynde Gibbs received the Serve Receive award with 162 receives and the Passing Award with 159 attempts. Alyssa DeSpain had 15 Stuff Blocks and Anna Chew had 14, both receiving the Blocking Award. Setting is such a complicated skill and requires so much training. Setters were Alyssa DeSpain, Sydney Bates, Taylor Wills, Sydney Cania, and Maddie Williams.
The 8th grade team came into this season with the focus of improving and developing their basic skills in preparation for this season and their entry into high school. This group of Ladies did an excellent job in training their “buddies” and being there for them in each step of their season. They were their “buddies” biggest fan throughout the season and you could hear that echoed throughout the evening as acknowledgements were made. The Ladies worked hard and persevered through tough times as a team. They were there for each other throughout the season both on and off the court. The Ladies took 2nd at the Carlinville Invitational and finished the season with an 8-8-1 record.
Those receiving certificates for their work were: Lydia Albertine for High Service Points with 87, Grace Zachary with High Aces with 42 High Kills with 139, and the Passing Award with 172 attempts; the Defensive Award went to Annie Rhodus with 105 attempts and Grace Zachary won the Stuff Block Award with 27. Albertine ran a 5-1 offense for the team and ended the season with 667 attempts with 161 Assists.
The Ladies have so many accomplishments to be proud of for the 2013 season and this night was designed to be special for all of their hard work. Thank you for being a part of the Carlinville Volleyball program. Each season will be a stronger one and high school competition raises the bar on competition. Summer work will soon be here with camp and open gyms. There are tournaments scheduled and lots of opportunities to further develop skills.
