Kelly scholarship dinner a success

To the editor:
Headlines are supposed to capture a reader’s attention and summarize the story to follow. The page one headline, “Community gathers to honor Mike Kelly,” from the March 2 edition of the Enquirer-Democrat was spot on that task. The scholarship dinner benefit held at the Elks Lodge was truly a gathering of community as evidenced by the attendance of current and former staff from CUSD #1, local business leaders, politicians and citizens at large who attended the event. Superintendent Kelly would be quick to agree that the success of any school district has to be rooted in community support. The success of any school is often measured by the quality of high school graduates at spring commencement, but the foundation of those students is established by supportive parents and community whose encouragement creates a desire for education within their children from day one.
The goal of the Mike Kelly Scholarship Dinner was twofold; the first was to provide an evening of food and fellowship for Mr. Kelly and his friends and the second was to raise funds for the establishment of a scholarship in Mike Kelly’s name for the benefit of future Carlinville High School graduates. The Scholarship Development Committee would like to extend our sincere thanks to those who attended the event and/or donated directly to the scholarship fund. The support has been generous and truly a community effort.
