Judy Cordum

Judy (Schmutzler) Cordum, 75, of Gillespie passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018, at her residence, after a lengthy struggle with multiple forms of cancer.

She was born May 21, 1943, in Litchfield to Ken and Edith (Rolando) Schmutzler. She married Kenneth Cordum on Feb. 5, 196, in a specially built chapel in West Plains, Mo.; he survives.

Mrs. Cordum’s family lived in Macoupin County and in Missouri during her youth. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in English and later earned a master of arts in education from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She and her husband settled in Gillespie, where they raised their two children. She taught at many levels in CUSD 7 for her entire career, finishing as a fourth-grade teacher. After retirement, she was a member of the Partnership for Educational Excellence District 7, serving as its secretary for many years. She was also an active leader at First United Methodist Church of Gillespie, participating in United Methodist Women and Harvest Feast. Her skills included perennial gardening, garment-making, quilting and volunteerism in church and civic organizations. She took great pride and pleasure in the accomplishments of her family members.

In addition to her husband, surviving are her mother, Edie Schmutzler of West Plains, Mo.; her children, Terry (Shelly) Cordum of Alton and Susan (Pete) Stromsland of Gillespie; grandchildren, Katie (Kathryn) Stromsland and Jason Stromsland; twin brother, Kenneth (Fayette) Schmutzler of Golden, Mo.; sister, Vicki (Gaylord) Gregory of West Plains, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Visitation was held from 9 a.m. until services at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, at First United Methodist Church in Gillespie. Kravanya Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Partnership for Educational Excellence District 7 and First United Methodist Church, both of Gillespie.
