John D. “Shine” Saric

John D. “Shine” Saric, 94, of Gillespie died at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2020 at 11 p.m. He was born June 25, 1926, in Sawyerville to Mike Saric and Anna (Yurkovich) Saric.

He married Nettie (Fisher) Saric July 29, 1950 in Arkansas. He was a retired guard for A.O. Smith and a custodian for Community Unit District 7. John was a graduate of Benld High School’s Class of 1944.  He played in the baseball minor league in 1949. John was a veteran of U.S. Army after having served during WWII. He was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge No. 217 and the VFW Post No. 4547. Shine was an avid sports fan.  He was an umpire and referee for 50 years.

He is survived by his spouse, Nettie Saric of Gillespie; children, Karen A. (Reg) Colbrook of The Villages, Fla., John F. Saric of Collinsville; grandson, Craig W. (Caitlin) Colbrook; great-grandchildren, Amelia, Theodore, Nathaniel, sisters, Rose Hemphill and Catherine (Joe) Constantino.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Sam Saric, Mike Saric, sisters, Mary Orr and Darlene Saric.  Private services will be held.
