Hurley caps strong junior season at state meet

Carlinville junior Ali Hurley was one of 112 golfers who began competition at the state tournament Friday, and one of 108 to finish up on Saturday.

Hurley finished tied for 43rd overall following a two-day competition of 36 holes at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.

Hurley was in a five-way tie for 35th after day one, after shooting an 85. That included a five-over-par 41 to start the tournament. She recorded a birdie on No. 17 (Par 3) and another birdie on No. 10 (Par 4).

The back half of the day had Hurley shooting a 44, for a one-day total of 85.

On Saturday, Hurley finished in a four-way tie for 43rd place overall, shooting an 89 for the day and a 174 for the tournament. Hurley had a 44 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine Saturday for her final day total of 89.

Lauren Chappell, a senior from Charleston, shot a two-day total of 149 (74-75) to win the individual championship and help lead the Trojans to the Class 1A team championship.

Other local golfers of note included Abby Brockmeyer of Lincolnwood, who finished in the tie for 13th overall with a 164 (86-78). Auburn’s Katie Tanner was tied for 22nd. Roxana’s Bailey Sharpmack finished tied for 31st.
