Hess found guilty of predatory assault

CARLINVILLE (Nov. 23, 2017) – Macoupin County State’s Attorney Jennifer A. Watson announced recently that a jury has found Thomas A. Hess, 32, of Virden guilty of predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony.

The case was tried by Watson in front of Judge Joshua A. Meyer. The jury returned a guilty verdict during the evening hours of Nov. 14, after about an hour of deliberation.

The verdict is the result of allegations that during the week of Nov. 6, 2016, Hess sexually assaulted a seven-year-old female at his home in Virden. The sexual assault was investigated by Virden Police Department.

“Mr. Hess took advantage of this innocent young girl to satisfy his own repulsive desires,” said Watson. “Through the diligent work of the Virden Police Department, the Macoupin County division of the Department of Children and Family Services, and the Sangamon County Children Advocacy Center, we were able to find justice and secure the conviction.”

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 12, 2018. Hess is not eligible for probation and faces 6-60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, with no less than 85 percent of the actual sentence to be served.
