Health Expo returns to Macoupin County
Health Expo 2013 is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, at the Crystal Ballroom in Staunton.
Everyone is welcome to attend, but adults 60 years of age and older may particularly benefit by attending.
Attendees can browse booths and displays, receive health screenings, win attendance prizes and enjoy food samples complete with recipes.
The Staunton Lion’s Club is joining the event by sponsoring two mobile screening vans at no cost. Anyone of any age will be able to have their hearing tested as well as be tested for diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration. Participants will be able to receive an oral cancer screening from the Maple Street Dental Clinic, a grip strength test by Petersen Healthcare, “Check for Cash” by the Office of the Illinois Comptroller, or participate in amplified phone testing by IMPACT, CIL.
Returning are the usual health screenings provided by the Health Department: Cholesterol, Iron, Oral Cancer, Hemoglobin A1c, Prostate Cancer, Colon Cancer. The VNA Tips Home Care and Hospice and Staunton Community Memorial Hospital Senior Solutions will be providing blood pressure screenings. A dietician will be focusing on nutrition and providing food samples. A pharmacist from Fritz Pharmacy in Staunton will be on hand to talk one on one with participants regarding medications. Participants can also ask questions of a nurse practitioner from the Maple Street Medical Clinic.
There will be over 30 booths focused on various health topics such as financial health, long term care, support groups, cancer topics, diabetes, Alzheimer and dementia, wound care, and more.
Participants will learn about services available to Macoupin County residents such as Locust Street Resource Center Services for the Elderly, Macoupin County Transportation Program, Illinois Secretary of State Driver Services, Veteran Services, SHIP, Silver Sneakers, and ICARE Long Term Care Ombudsman Program.
Attendance prize drawings will include fruit baskets donated by Senior Solutions, two pairs of sunglasses from Illinois Eye Surgeons, home care items from Sullivan’s Home Health and more.
There will be a suggested donation of $5 per person for people 60 years old and older and a $15 admission fee charged for people under 60 years of age.
Health Expo 2013 is sponsored by the Macoupin County Public Health Department, the Area Agency on Aging for Lincolnland, and the Crystal Ballroom. Pre-registration is required only for those participants who plan to have the cholesterol, PSA, or A1c screening tests.
