Head Start now enrolling students
GILLESPIE (July 5, 2018) – Illinois Valley Head Start is currently enrolling families for the next school year.
Head Start is a comprehensive child development program for economically disadvantaged families with children ages birth through 5.
IVEDC provides education services with a play-based curriculum. All teachers have a bachelor’s degree. A nutritious lunch and breakfast are provided, as well as transportation. Assistance with health and family services is available. Children will gain skills necessary to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. The programs provide educational services, health and mental health wellness, dental and nutrition services, family engagement opportunities, and services to children with special needs.
IVEDC has eight Head Start locations throughout Macoupin, Calhoun, Jersey and Greene counties. In addition to center-based programs, a home-based program is also available. The center-based program provides structured classroom activities five days per week for 5.5 hours per day (except for Calhoun County) from late August through May. The activities are designed to meet the child’s educational, social, physical and developmental needs. The goal of the Head Start program is to ensure that children have access to the experiences and opportunities necessary for their development and later success in public school and life.
Children enrolled in the home-based program receive weekly 90-minute home visits by a home visitor who works with the parents to plan and provide educational activities, field trips and socializations for children based on their academic or social needs.
