Golf season ends for Hurley, Hughes, Winters in
Carlinville’s golf team nearly qualified for sectional play, finishing fourth at the Pana Regional Wednesday afternoon.
The top three teams and top 10 individuals not on the three top teams advance further along.
It was not a bad day for the Cavaliers as Ali Hurley and Baylee Hughes both advanced to the Rochester Sectional next week.
At Oak Terrace Golf Course in Pana, Hurley shot a front-nine score of 44 and a back-nine score of 45 to finish with an 89, good for sixth overall.
Hughes had a front-nine round of 51 and a back-nine round of 54 to finish with a 105, good for 19th overall and a chance to advance.
Charleston won the team competition, easily outdistancing Raymond Lincolnwood 335-391. In third place was Tuscola at 451. Carlinville finished fourth at 466, just 15 behind Tuscola for a shot at sectionals. Pana was fifth with a 471.
Also scoring for Carlinville, Macy Walker had a 73 on the front nine and an 87 on the back for a round of 160. Cara Emery shot an 80 on the front nine and an 87 on the back for a 167.
Charleston had three of the top five scores, led by Lauren Chappell who shot a regional-best round of 68.
The Rochester Sectional was Monday, and the two Carlinville golfers competed with a chance to advance to state.
They would be denied however, as Hughes and Hurley competed at The Rail Golf Course in Sherman.
Hurley shot a 97 and Hughes a 114. The cut for making state was 91. Rochester, Charleston and Central Catholic advanced as teams to state. Hailey Haugh of Quincy Notre Dame was the top golfer with an 83.
Carlinville’s Colton Winters also faced off in regional competition in Anna on Monday.
