GHS soccer finishes regular season 6-14-2

Jeremie Yakana scores hat trick against Vandalia

The Gillespie High School varsity soccer team was without a win since Sept. 14 and shouldering a seven-game losing streak. The woes finally ended Oct. 3 at Vandalia.
Five different Miners found the back of the net en route to a 7-0 conference onslaught.
Jeremie Yakana led the way for GHS with a hat trick (three goals) and was joined by Spencer Hoehl, Chance Reiniesch, Trey Davee and Evan Young in the scoring department.
Yakana and Davee also contributed with a pair of assists each.
Final Home Games
Gillespie’s offense cooled off over the course of their final three contests, all at home.
The Miners suffered back-to-back shutouts at the hands of Pleasant Plains (4-0) Oct. 5 and North Mac (2-0) Oct. 8 before falling short to East-Alton Wood River (2-1) on Senior Night, Oct. 10.
Gillespie concluded the regular season 6-14-2 and 2-6 in South Central Conference play.
Gillespie assigned to Class 2A
The Gillespie Miners were granted an automatic quarterfinal bid in the IHSA Class 2A brackets. GHS will attempt to avenge a 7-0 regular season loss in a rematch against Bethalto Civic Memorial Oct. 22 at Jacksonville High School. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
