Eades retires from phone company

CARLINVILLE (Sept. 6 2018) – Melvin L. Eades retired Aug. 10 after celebrating 45 years of service with the telephone company.

Most of the equipment he used when he started working now resides in the telephone museum. He started working with General Telephone Company, which later became GTE. He began his career as a lineman on a plow/line crew in Carlinville, then became a serviceman in the Auburn, Virden, Bunker Hill and Carlinville areas. Following that, he became head lineman in Carlinville over an aerial and buried crew. In 2000, he took a network engineering position in Carlinville when the company became Citizen’s Communication. A few years later, the company became Frontier.

Eades will be honored at a retirement event from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Hettick Community Building.
