Drug, alcohol awareness event April 25
GILLESPIE (April 12, 2018) – The Gillespie High School SADD/MPACT’D teams will host an event for high school students and their parents on Wednesday, April 25, regarding the dangers of alcohol/drug abuse, social host laws, and the consequences of alcohol and drug-related choices from the perspective of law enforcement, emergency and community professionals.
The event will be split into two sessions, each with a chili/hot dog dinner. The first session will have dinner at 5 p.m. and presentations from 5:30-6:30 p.m., while the second will have dinner at 6:30 p.m. and presentations from 7-8 p.m.
The SADD team has collected data from the Illinois Youth Survey taken by GHS sophomores and seniors. They will present their findings, as well as prepare a short video in which they will discuss drug and alcohol use, social host laws and more. In conjunction with that panel, there will be a “hidden in plain sight” room with a presentation on IYS data on illicit drugs, marijuana and over-the-counter medication abuse. Students will work in conjunction with Chris Coyne to convey their message.
There will also be a kid-friendly room with activities so parents can bring their children in eighth grade or younger.
The SADD/MPACT’D teams have been working with the Macoupin County Anti-Meth Coalition, Illinois SADD and other county and state organizations to make this event possible. In addition to the free food and drinks, attendance gifts will be provided.
