Dorchester Homecoming Aug. 5-7
Dorchester Volunteer Fire Department will host the 56th annual Dorchester Homecoming celebration Friday through Sunday, Aug. 5-7.
Jersey County Cornhole will run a cornhole tournament on Friday, with registration at 6:30 p.m. and play beginning at 7:30 p.m. A horseshoe tournament will be held Saturday, with registration at 9 a.m. and pitching at 10 a.m. The Prairieland Garden Tractor Pullers will sponsor a lawn tractor pull on Sunday, with weigh-in at 10:30 a.m. and pulling at 11:30 a.m. Shipman CNB Bank and Trust will sponsor a washers tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday, with registration at noon.
Weekend kittenball activities will begin with a game for children in eighth grade and younger on Friday. Participants need only to show up prior to teams being picked starting at 5 p.m.; play will begin shortly afterward. The adult co-ed tournament play will begin Friday evening on the lighted field and continue on Saturday and Sunday, with the championship game being played Sunday evening.
The parade will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, and fireworks will follow at dusk. Other activities include inflatables, mini-golf and bingo, which will be played every night.
Music will be provided by Doc Holiday from 7 p.m. to midnight on Friday; acoustic duo Ashley Heflin and Justin Lowder from 1-5 p.m. Saturday; Jennifer Thompson and Harvest Drive Band from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday; Joe Frew from 12-4 p.m. Sunday; and Alter Ego from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Sunday.
Buffalo will be served on Friday and until the parade on Saturday, after which time catfish fritters will be available. On Sunday, whatever remains will be served. Other offerings available throughout the weekend include barbecue sandwiches, burgers, homemade pies and more.
The celebration will culminate with a drawing for prizes donated by area merchants. Tickets are three for $1.
