CMS fights back to beat Gillespie
The Carlinville Middle School baseball team took one on the short end of the stick Wednesday, falling to host Nokomis 11-1 in five innings.
Nokomis scored four runs in the first inning and five more in the second in building a 9-1 advantage.
Carlinville scored a run in the second inning, driven in by Lonny Rosentreter. But the Cavs were held to just two hits – singles by Alex Strutner and Kameron Sankamper, who scored the only run for Carlinville (5-5 overall).
Chris Griffith and Aiden Naugle both saw time on the mound for Carlinville. Griffith struck out two hitters and Naugle fanned one.
Carlinville 14, Gillespie 13
Carlinville avenged an earlier loss to Gillespie by rallying from seven runs down to beat the Miners Monday afternoon.
Gillespie scored eight runs in the third to take an 8-1 advantage. It was a 9-4 lead for Gillespie heading to the fifth inning.
The Cavies chipped away, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 9-8.
Gillespie scored three runs in he sixth and led 12-8, but the Cavies battled back to tie the game with four more runs in the sixth inning.
After a run in the seventh gave Gillespie a 13-12 lead, Carlinville would rally to win it in the bottom half.
With one out, Naugle singled, advanced to second and scored on a double by Colton DeLong. A wild pitch with two outs plated DeLong with the game-winner.
Rosentreter went 3 for 4 with a double and 5 RBIs for Carlinville; DeLong was 4 for 4, double, three runs, RBI; Boatman 3 for 3, two doubles, run, four RBIs; Robinson 1 for 4, run, double, two RBIs; Naugle 1 for 3, three runs; Strutner 1 for 4, run; Chase Michaelis 1 for 1, run; Sankamper run; TJ Sims two runs; Mitchell Proctor run.
DeLong allowed six earned runs with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Naugle got the win by pitching 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run, one hit with a walk and a strikeout.
