Carlinville High School’s performance of Secrets Every Smart Traveler Should Know will take place this weekend in the school’s gymnasium.
While CHS produced this musical before, it may not be a show familiar to everyone. “It is a modern show. It was written in 1999. I actually directed this in 2003 here at Carlinville High School,” said Reiher.
Although not all of them are on stage, a significant number of students are participating in the production. There are about 64 actors on stage, about 20 members in the pit band and another 25 stage hands.
Unlike most musicals, Secrets Every Smart Traveler Should Know doesn’t feature any specific actors. “We don’t necessarily have any leads, which I think is great, because I have so much talent in this particular cast, I’m able to feature multiple performers throughout the show,” Reiher explained.
Because the decision was made to repeat a show that was performed at CHS 14 years ago, there’s little doubt Reiher likes the script, which features musical performances over dialogue. “It’s a performance-centered show, so I’m able to highlight many of the kids’ talents,” said Reiher.
This year’s show is dedicated to Reiher’s late husband, Bob Reiher, who passed away last summer. In a statement written on the back of the show’s program, L. Reiher wrote, “This is a show that almost wasn’t. For the past 16 years, I have directed the CHS musical with my husband, Bob, as part of the production team. Without him, I was not sure I could direct again. My dear friends, Michael, Jessica, Dustin and Ryan, helped me make the right decision for myself and our students. Every rehearsal was an opportunity to honor Bob’s life and dedication to the musical. My deepest gratitude to my production team, with special thanks to the newest members, Paige, Chris and Dawn. Many of the cast, crew and band had heavy hearts at times throughout this rehearsal process. Despite that, and, perhaps, because of that, they worked tirelessly and gave their all to make this show a success. I could not be prouder of them.”
Secrets Every Smart Traveler Should Know will be performed at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18, in the gymnasium at Carlinville High School. Tickets are available at the door, or at the CHS office, which can be reached by calling 217-854-3109. Reserved seats are $9 and bleacher seats are $8.
