CHS football in North Mac seven-on-seven

Several members of Carlinville High School’s varsity football team took part in a seven-on-seven event in Girard hosted by North Mac High School.

“We had four outings, we played five games each Wednesday, we went to one tournament over the summer,” Carlinville High School varsity football coach Chad Easterday said. “It’s just a way that (gives the players a chance to) work on some pass routes, work on some defensive stuff, just  get the kids moving, thinking about football.”

Easterday said North Mac did a great job of hosting the seven-on-seven competitions. There is the possibility of taking part in additional weekend camps, though Easterday admitted the Wednesday competitions against several other schools provides plenty of football exposure.

The training, which began on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 p.m., gave offensive skill position players — quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends — the chance to run pass plays without linemen on the field.

“That’s the definition of seven-on-seven,” he said. “It’s all pass. It’s just oriented in terms of, you get points for going a certain amount of yards, it’s one-hand touch, that type of stuff.”

For the first time, CHS also took a group of freshmen and sophomores to the seven-on-seven competition.

“We kind of combined the jayvee and the freshmen because they don’t really get separated in the summer,” he said.

This summer, Easterday has been assisted by the rest of the high school coaching staff, including Quinn Steiner, John Reels and Shane Owsley. Helping with the jayvee/freshmen grouping has been Ken Garrison and new volunteer coach Michael Morrison.

The program concluded July 17, after starting in early June and taking a week off the day before the Fourth of July.
