Carlinville High School’s boys track team started practicing for the upcoming season in late January. Indoor meets were on the schedule in February and March, and the outdoor portion of the season was supposed to begin March 19. However, the outdoor meet at Staunton has been postponed.

In total, the team has 33 boys competing this spring in a variety of jumping, sprinting, distance and relay events.

Coach Ken Garrison returns for another season. Garrison, who coached from 1997-2001, returned in 2012 to replace Larry Huffman.

Practice for the indoor season began January 22. The indoor season started at Principia College with a meet against mostly class 2A schools Feb. 23. While no team scores were kept at the first meet, Garrison said the team “fared very well.”

The win the following week, March 2, at Illinois College with 36 class 1A schools, hopefully gave an idea of things to come as CHS took first place, according to Garrison.

“The indoor meets get progressively more difficult with Charleston and the Illinois Prep Top Times Meet,” Garrison said. “If we continue to work hard and stay healthy, we could have a good season.”

The team competes in the State Indoor Prep Meet Friday, March 22, in Bloomington, then has an outdoor meet at Hillsboro (March 26) before its first home meet Tuesday, April 2, against Litchfield and Gillespie.

Garrison thinks sprints and jumps will be a strength this season.

“The squad is strong in the sprints and jumps this year with returning performers from last season and a couple of strong additions,” Garrison said. “A young and talented distance crew gives us some added strength when we move from the field to the track.

Brendan Stewart and Cory Farneti  anchor a sprint crew that also includes returners Levi Loveless, Patrick Serrano, Garet Gwillim and Ladarius Dunlap. Barry Stewart, Kinney Myles, Kyle Levan, Xavier Dunlap, and Alec Bradley have joined the returning sprinters to bolster an already strong group.

Junior Jack Denby, the current school record holder in the pole vault, has already broken his own school record this season by vaulting 15 feet, 0 inches.

Kyle Kleeman and Levi Loveless, coming off a successful 2012, will be joined by Barry Stewart and Chandler Seago in the long and triple jumps.

Kleeman will be joined by Tyler Siegel and Joe Bates in the high jump.

Kyle Sottoriva heads a throws crew of Brendan Stewart, Ryan Griffith, Michael Markham, Matt Nafziger and Kendall Slightom.

Michael Jones, Michael Bledsoe, Jessy Robinson and Ethan Suttles will handle the hurdle races this spring.

Alex Leija, Jake Pohlman, David Serrano, Austin Landon, Christopher Serrano, Nolan Kreipe, Cory Landon, Ethan Suttles, and Conner Schmidt make up the middle distance and distance squad.

Postseason begins May 16
CHS will start the journey to state Thursday, May 16, when it takes part in an IHSA Sectional. The state competition is set for May 23 and 25 in Charleston.
