Carlinville High School’s baseball program began practicing for the 2013 season Feb. 23.
This year’s varsity squad is coached by Logan Ridenour, who is in his first year as a teacher at the high school.
The first practices began in the gym, though players on the varsity and junior varsity squads have had a handful of practices outside, Ridenour said.
Ridenour thinks this team won’t have problems putting the ball in play, and there are plenty of individuals that have seen time at the varsity level.
“We can hit, that’s what I’ve seen, we can make pretty good contact and put the ball in play,” he said. “We’ve got guys who’ve had varsity time since they were younger so we’re not lacking experience.”
Home games this season will take place at the High School field.
“While they’re doing the repairs (at CNB Field at Loveless Park) this was just more accessible and a little easier for us to maintain our own fields,” Ridenour said.
This year’s varsity roster includes outfielder/pitcher Clayton Campbell, infielder Marcus Herschelman, outfielder/pitcher Dalton Jamieson, infielder/catcher/pitcher Thad Roberts, infielder Jonathan Bettis, catcher Bryce DeSpain, outfielder/pitcher Kris Emmons, infielder Benjamin Rogers, infielder Kole Utter, outfielder/pitcher Brayton Gibbs, outfielder/pitcher Devin Stoops, infielder/pitcher Joeb Easterday, outfielder/pitcher Ross Albert, infielder/pitcher Jeffrey Hart, infielder/pitcher Eric Pingolt and outfielder Elijah Barber.
CHS starts South Central Conference competition Friday, March 29, when it travels to Vandalia.
Ridenour thinks Greenville will present a challenge, and is of the opinion that Southwestern should be improved as well.
“Greenville always is pretty good, Southwestern should be decent,” he said.
With Staunton and Gillespie getting added into the South Central Conference at the start of this school year, CHS will have two more conference schools on the schedule from Macoupin County.
Jesse White returns to coach the junior varsity squad this spring.
CHS went 1-1 at Lenz Field in Jacksonville March 16. Not counting the postseason, which is set to begin May 13, the team has 28 more games — 13 at home and 15 on the road.
