Carlinville’s Emma Smith capped a sophomore season with a school record pole vault Saturday in the state finals at Eastern Illinois University.

Smith pole vaulted 11-feet-9 inches to take third place in the state. She had advanced by clearing 10-feet-3 inches on Friday on her third attempt.

Smith and Emma Meyer of Central A&M both cleared 11-feet-9 inches, with Meyer taking second with less attempts. The state champion was Kristin Slaughter of Effingham St. Anthony, who cleared 12-feet-6 inches.

Smith’s 11-9 clearance on Saturday broke her own school record set earlier in the season.

Rachel Olroyd, another CHS sophomore, advanced to the state finals in the 800-meter run on Saturday as well.

In Thursday’s semifinals, Olroyd overtook a trio of competitors in the final 100 meters, including DuQuoin’s Gabby Alongi, to win the semifinal heat in a time of 2:23.88, qualifying for Saturday’s final.

Olroyd then competed and finished 12th on Saturday’s finals, running in a time of 2:24.78. The state champion was Urbana University’s Arielle Summitt in 2:13.17.

Macy Walker nearly advanced in the discus, winning her heat of the semifinals on Thursday with a toss of 112-feet-3 inches. Her throw was just not nearly enough to advance to Saturday, as she had the longest distance not to advance.

North Mac’s Lauren Sullivan was ninth in her heat at 106-feet-3 inches.

The Cavies 4 x 800 relay team of Patty Walsh, Rory Drew, Olroyd and Mackenzie Harris, was 10th overall in their heat with a time of 11:40.32. Five of the other teams advanced from their heat.

Drew, a freshman, competed in the 400-meter dash. She was sixth in her heat with a time of 1:01.58.

Ava Ostendorf, a junior from Bunker Hill, was sixth in her heat of the 400 at 1:02.81.

Mt. Olive’s Zoe Murphy was eighth in her heat of the 300-meter hurdles at 52.60 seconds.

Gillespie’s Jaiden Braundmeier finished 11th in her flight of the triple jump, at 31-feet-10.25 inches.

Emma Smith was third in the state for Carlinville in the pole vault on Saturday in Charleston.

Rory Drew extends from the starting blocks of the 400-meter dash on Thursday at Charleston.

Rachel Olroyd sips a cup of water after rallying to win her heat of the 800-meter run on Thursday in Charleston.

Mackenzie Harris competes in the final leg of the 4 x 800 relay for Carlinville early Thursday afternoon at the state meet.

Patty Walsh opens the Cavaliers 4 x 800 meter relay with a run around the Eastern Illinois University track at the state meet.

Macy Walker, discus hurler, won her flight of the discus but came up just shy of advancing to Saturday’s finals at Charleston last Thursday.
