Cavaliers split first four junior high baseball tilts

Carlinville’s junior high baseball team won its season opener for a second consecutive season, rallying for a 9-8 win over Staunton Wednesday afternoon at Loveless Park.

The Junior Cavies struck for six runs in the first inning to take an early lead, but Staunton came back.

A run in the second and a seven-run fourth inning propelled Staunton into an 8-6 lead.

Carlinville tied it with two runs in the fifth inning, then won the game on a walkoff in the bottom of the seventh.

Staunton outhit Carlinville 11-7 but had three errors to one for the Cavies.

Lonny Rosentreter picked up the win in relief, tossing two shutout innings, allowing three hits and walking two. Dawson Westnedge started, going three innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs with three walks and a strikeout. Levi Yudinsky pitched two innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Rosentreter went 1 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. Cooper Gossard went 1 for 2 with two RBIs; Yudinsky was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Chase Michaelis went 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI; Alex Strutner 1 for 4, run, RBI; Dustin Roberts 1 for 3, double, run; Carson Wiser run scored; Ayden Tiburzi two runs; Cole Tapscott one run.

Carlinville 9, Mt. Olive 8

Thursday’s makeup game with Mt. Olive from Monday’s rainout took place at Loveless Park.

Once again, the visitors scored seven unanswered runs. Once more, the Junior Cavies had a late comeback in them, and improved to 2-0 on the season.

Mt. Olive opened a 7-0 lead after a three-run first and a four-run third inning.

Carlinville scored a run in the third and two in the fourth inning to make it 7-3.

It was 8-3 when the Cavies came up with three in the sixth and three more in the seventh for a second straight walk-off win.

Strutner went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs; Roberts 1 for 3, two runs, RBI; Wiser 1 for 3, RBI; Rosentreter 1 for 4, two RBIs; Tiburzi 1 for 4, run; Michaelis 1 for 2, two run; Westnedge 1 for 1; Zaiden Reese run scored; Gossard 1 for 3, two runs; Yudinsky 1 for 2, two RBIs.

Rosentreter (2-0) gained the win for the second straight day, striking out one over an inning and a third of scoreless baseball.

Tapscott started pitching three innings, with Yudinsky pitching 2 1/3 innings of relief. Tapscott struck out two batters.

Lincolnwood 7, Carlinville 5

Friday’s contest had the Cavies scoring four runs in the third to take an early 4-0 lead.

However, the Lancers scored seven runs in the sixth and went on to defeat the Junior Cavies 7-5.

Strutner pitched five innings, allowing two runs and six hits with three strikeouts. Roberts and Rosentreter also saw action on the mound for Carlinville, both striking out one batter.

Strutner was 1 for 4; JD Byots scored a run; Roberts 3 for 4, double, run, RBI; Wiser 2 for 4, run, double, two RBIs; Rosentreter 1 for 4, run, RBI; Michaelis 1 for 3; Westnedge 1 for 1; Yudinsky 1 for 3, run.

Carlinville is 2-1 on the season.

Gillespie 18, Carlinville 6

Monday, the Junior Cavies returned home and a strong Gillespie outfit came to town.

The Indians scored nine runs in the first and beat the Carlinville team 18-6.

Carlinville scored twice in the first and four runs in the second, but trailed 13-6 after two innings. Gillespie added two runs in the third and three in the fourth, outhitting the Cavies 16-9.

Strutner hit a pair of doubles, scored twice and drove in a run for Carlinville (2-2). Wiser had a double, two runs and RBI; Roberts had an RBI; Rosentreter was 2 for 3, with two RBIs; Tiburzi had an RBI. Mason Duckles was 1 for 2; Gossard had a double and run scored; Yudinsky 1 for 2, run; and Tapscott 1 for 1.

On the mound, Westnedge struck out one; Rosentreter had two strikeouts and Tiburzi had a strikeout as well.
