Cavaliers face Roxana Aug. 30

By Daniel Winningham
Carlinville High School’s varsity football team starts the schedule for its 2013 season Friday, Aug. 30, when it travels to Roxana High School for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

CHS has won nine straight against the Shells, including 56-20 at home in the first game a year ago.

During the nine-game winning streak against Roxana, the Cavaliers have scored at least 40 or more points in seven of those wins and have won each game by an average of  38.67 points.

Carlinville has scored at least 50 points against Roxana the past two seasons: In 2011, it was a 50-7 win in which Brendan Stewart reached the end zone seven times. In last year’s game, CHS scored 22 first-quarter points and then scored the game’s final five touchdowns after the Shells pulled within 22-20 in the second quarter.

The Shells last defeated the Cavaliers Oct. 3, 2003 when they earned a 25-7 victory at Charles Raich Field in Roxana.

CHS varsity coach Chad Easterday thinks the Shells are an improved team from a year ago, when they were 4-5.

“They’re a very much improved ball club over last year’s record,” he said. “I know they bring back some key players. Their underclass level was very, very good. You never know that first week how they’re going to develop and what things they’ve done in the offseason.”
