Carlinville native Katie Kirk picked the Macoupin Military Support Group as the recipient of a $7,500 charitable donation she earned during the 2012 Maurices’ Main Street Model Search.

Kirk presented the check to the MMSG March 16, 2013 during an open house at the Litchfield Maurices, where friends and family could come to congratulate her as well as see posters of her hanging in the store.

The Maurices Main Street Model Search’s purpose is to find a dozen real women in all sizes each year to represent Maurices in their upcoming campaigns.

Kirk had always been interested in becoming a professional model, but never thought it was a realistic goal. After seeing a billboard for the model search she decided to go for her dream.

The process began with voters helping to narrow down nearly 1,500 submissions to just 100 contestants. From there, contestants had to submit a video that Maurices judges, including celebrity stylist and fashion designer Christopher Straub, had to narrow from 100 to 20 contestants.

Kirk, chosen as one of the top 20, was then flown to a casting call in Minneapolis.  While in Minneapolis the women had their hair and makeup done and their clothes picked out for them.

Kirk said it was fun but also a lot of work. She also had a 30 minute interview with the judges. She later received a call telling her she was one of the 12 women chosen for the 2012 model search.

She was flown to Miami in Florida for a week of photo shoots. These photos will be used for national exposure at Maurices locations, and through mailers and social media. Kirk was also awarded a $1,500 Maurices gift card.

The Macoupin Military Support Group started in November 2006. The mission is to provide support to Macoupin military persons, stationed overseas or in hospitals, and their families. The group bolsters morale by means of letters and care packages,  and offers encouragement to their families.

The Maurices donation will help the group to continue its mission. Currently, the group has around 30 care packages going out monthly and a portion of the donation will help towards postage and supplies for the boxes.

If you know of a military person serving overseas that is from Macoupin County that is not receiving a care package from MMSG,  please let them know so they can get him/her on the mailing list.

If you would like to help pack boxes, the group meets at 500 West Main Street in Carlinville (across from Casey’s) the second Tuesday of each month starting at 6 p.m.

A business meeting follows at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come to one or both.

If you would like more information about the group please contact them at or call Christine Goldstein at 217-854-5298. The mailing address is P.O. Box 322, Carlinville, IL 62626.
