Carlinville Eye Care changes ownership

Carlinville Eye Care changes ownership

Carlinville Eye Care, at 300 North Broad Street, is undergoing a minor change of sorts starting in March.

Longtime optometrist John Lapp, the owner of Carlinville Eye Care, plans to cut back on his office hours and Katie Goodman-Thomas will take over as owner.

Thomas, also an optometrist, spoke about the upcoming change.

“We’re just kind of flip-flopping places,” Goodman-Thomas said. “I’ll have ownership and he’ll be my associate.”

Goodman-Thomas, who joined in August 2011, has been employed as an associate to Lapp since joining Carlinville Eye Care.

Lapp won’t be working Thursdays anymore.

The switchover is effective March 1.

Lapp has plans to retire in four years, Goodman-Thomas said.

“We’ve had this in the works for quite some time,” Goodman-Thomas said.

Thomas said she and Lapp both see about 15 patients per day.

In recognition of the ownership change, the business plans a grand re-opening week March 11-15 with 25 percent off all frames.

Also, an open house with refreshments and door prizes is set for Tuesday, March 14, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Besides seeing local patients from in town, Carlinville Eye Care has patients from all over the county, including Staunton, Gillespie,  Benld, Dorchester, Shipman, Medora, Palmyra, Hettick, Virden, Girard, Chatham and Litchfield.

Goodman-Thomas finished optometry school in Chicago in May 2011.

The experience and interaction with patients at optometry school wasn’t the same as at Carlinville Eye Care, according to Goodman-Thomas.

“The type of patients we dealt with are much different than in Carlinville,” Goodman-Thomas said. “You get a more one-on-one feel, develop a rapport with the patient and get to know them. As a student, I didn’t have time to sit and talk with patients about life, or how their kids were doing or whatnot. It seems like now in this setting, you can have that rapport with your patients and I do like that about the practice.”

Other employees
In addition to Lapp and Thomas, the rest of the Carlinville Eye Care staff includes pretester Katie Talkington, optician Beth Fanning, insurance biller Lori Palsen, insurance biller Alyx Beck and receptionist Crystal Zapata.

“Our goal at Carlinville Eye Care is to provide high-quality eye care utilizing state-of-the-art technology and equipment,” according to a message on Carlinville Eye Care’s web site. “We feature fashionable frames and the latest contact lens designs. Our friendly, well-trained staff makes the difference in giving the best in medical and vision care.”
