On Jan. 26, the Carlinville Cub Scout Pack 65 hosted its annual Pinewood Derby  Race at Cross Church on West Main Street. A total of 27 scouts competed in the event. Concessions were provided by the Girl Scout Troop 6415.

Every year, the Pack collects donations for local groups as a race entry fee. For this year’s event, the local Military Support Group was chosen for charity.

The minature cars were handed out along with a set of BSA rules at the Pack’s monthly meeting on Dec. 18. The boys were given a month to prepare their vehicles for racing day. In addition to a specified height and length requirement, all cars were restricted to a maximum weight of five ounces.

All of the cub scouts decorated their cars with several unique designs – including Super Mario, Pokemon, a U.S Army tank and even a mouse trap. Prior to race time, all vehicles were put on display for judging.

This year’s Individual Design Award Winners were Zane Emery (Most Patriotic), Lucas Rife (Best Classic Car), Kurtis Killam (Best Non-Car Design), Barry Hart (Best Cub Scout Design) and Jack Lohnes (Judges’ Choice).

The judges for this year’s event were Katie Goodman, Michelle Owsley and Christine Goldstein.

The race was divided into four rounds, with four participants taking part in each trial. The Speed Awards were given to the scouts that had recorded the lowest average time over the course of all four races.

Fischer Johns (1st), Aaron Jones (2nd) and Rife (3rd) recieved awards for the Tigers. Drake Peterson (1st) and Eli Emery (2nd) were the dynamic duo for the Wolves. Joel White (1st), Augie Smith (2nd) and Emery (3rd) all walked away with a trophy for the Bears. Wyatt Hart (1st), Nelson White (2nd) and Gage McFarland (3rd) represented the Webelos. Connor Rice (1st) and Harry Yaeger (2nd) were both honored as recipients of the Arrow of Light. Ryder Powers (1st, 2.2745 sec.), Houston Turley (2nd, 2.2930 sec.), Philip Hart (3rd, 2.2953 sec.) and Aiden Gillespie (Most Fuel Efficient Car) were recognized as the four frontrunners of the entire pack.
