Gillespie-Benld Area Ambulance Service and the Gillespie Fire Department responded to a single-car accident just before 1 a.m. Sunday, July 23, on the dead end of East Pine Street, Gillespie.

According to Police Chief Jared DePoppe, an officer reported a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on northbound Route 4 on the city’s south end. By the time the officer turned around and attempted to pull the vehicle over, the car had continued eastbound on Pine Street, running stop signs at Macoupin, Shelby and Second streets. The officer then observed the vehicle continue onto the dead end on East Pine, swerve around the sign at the end of the street, then drive into the creek, at which time fire and ambulance were called to the scene.

The driver, Kassandra Voss, 20, Medora, was the vehicle’s only occupant. She was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Charges against her include driving under the influence, speeding, disobeying a stop sign and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

According to DePoppe, other than Voss’ vehicle, no other property damage was reported.
