Brighton native wins tourney in Alton
Spencer T. Olin Golf Course in Alton hosted the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour July 30-31, with an area golfer winning the boys 16-18 year-old boys division.
Nick Messinger of Brighton would shoot a consistent two rounds of golf with a 74 on Saturday and a 72 on Sunday to earn an eight-stroke victory, 146-154 over his closest competition, Michael Brown of Smithfield, Ky.
On Saturday, Messinger shot a two-over-par 74, which included five birdies, including three in a row on the 13th through 15th hole. His round also included three straight bogeys on holes four through six, and a couple of double bogeys on the back stretch. But he maintained a lead over Andrew Modder of Kirkwood, Mo. by two strokes.
Sunday’s action had Messenger shooting an even par round of 72, which included three birdies and three bogeys. For the tournament, Messenger had eight birdies, 20 pars, six bogeys and two double bogeys. He shot one-under-par on the Par 5 holes in the tournament.
The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour was founded in 2007 with golfers participating in one of six age divisions. It hosts events in 32 states, including Illinois and Missouri.
Other tournament winners included Sean Minor of Columbia, Mo. with a 149 in the boys 11-13 division; Avery Rea of Carterville with a 181 in the girls 14-18 division; Sierra Fink of Peachtree City, Ga. in the girls 13-under category with a 168; and Griffin Barker of Louisville, Ky. in the boys 10-under age division with a 196.
